It Depends on How You Burn
The honest answer is: it depends. But here's a rough guide based on what we see from our customers across Crewe, Nantwich and the rest of Cheshire.
The Quick Answer
- Occasional burner (weekends only): 1 jumbo bag (0.75 m³) — roughly 2–3 weeks of fires
- Regular burner (most evenings): 2 jumbo bags or a half load (1.5 m³) — roughly 4–6 weeks
- Daily burner (every evening, all winter): Full load (3 m³) — roughly 3 months
- Serious burner (all day, every day): Double load (6 m³) — roughly 6 months
How to Think About Volume
A jumbo builder's bag holds about 0.75 cubic metres of logs. That sounds like a lot, but stacked neatly it's about a metre wide, a metre deep and 75cm tall. For a single stove lit every evening, that'll last you about 2–3 weeks.
A full load tipped loose is about 3 m³ — that's four jumbo bags' worth. If you burn every evening from November to February, that's roughly what you'll need.
What Affects How Much You Need
- How often you light the stove — the biggest factor
- How hot you run it — a roaring fire eats wood faster
- How well-insulated your house is — a draughty room needs more heat
- Whether you're heating one room or the whole house
- How much storage you have — a full load needs a proper log store
Don't Forget Kindling
You'll need kindling to light every fire. A large net of kindling does about 15–20 fires. If you're lighting every evening through winter, you'll want 3–5 nets.
