What's the Difference?

When you're buying firewood in Cheshire, you'll see two main types: kiln-dried and seasoned (sometimes called barn-dried). Both will heat your home — but they behave differently, and the price reflects that.

Kiln-Dried Logs

Kiln-dried logs are dried in a kiln — a controlled drying chamber that uses heat to draw moisture out of the wood quickly and consistently. The result is logs that are dry throughout, light to handle, and burn hot and clean.

Pros:

  • Consistently dry — every log, not just the ones on top
  • Light and easy to carry
  • Burn hot and efficient
  • Light easily with kindling

Cons:

  • Cost a bit more per bag

Seasoned and Barn-Dried Logs

Seasoned logs are split and stacked in the open air or in a barn to dry naturally over months — typically 12 to 18 months. Barn-drying (which is what we do) gives them shelter from rain while letting the air circulate.

Pros:

  • Great value for money
  • Natural, slow drying process
  • Burn long and steady once they're going

Cons:

  • Can be slightly variable — some logs drier than others
  • May need a bit more kindling to get going

Which Should You Buy?

Go kiln-dried if: you want maximum heat with minimum fuss, you light your stove infrequently, or you want logs that are ready to go with no surprises.

Go seasoned or barn-dried if: you burn regularly, you've got a good log store, and you want the best value for keeping your home warm through winter.

Our Honest Take

Honestly? Both are good dry firewood. Kiln-dried is a bit more convenient, barn-dried is a bit better value. If you're burning every evening through winter, barn-dried mixed hardwood in a jumbo bag is hard to beat on value. If you light your stove at the weekend and want it to go up first time, kiln-dried is worth the extra.
